How to change the world...

As i said on Facebook today:

"Carpe the fuck out of this diem"

This is an extremely interesting read, and a reminder to those (myself included) who want to change the world; you can do something about it. There are a lot of so-called keyboard warriors out there - many of whom may well do nothing 'physical' to back up their rage-fuelled Facebook rants - but I do not believe that ranting about what you care about on social media has no impact on the world (if I did I would be a hypocrite of epic proportions). I believe that the world pays more attention than ever to social media. Just look at the impact Amnesty International has on important global injustices and see that much of their work is done online. Of course, there are more useful ways of harnessing your power than Facebook statuses and comments: email/tweet/write to your MP or local Council or PM etc; protest; collect signatures on petitions (remember that they can get considered by our parliament or the EU); challenge people with damaging views/actions on the street in a polite, yet thought-provoking way; go and volunteer with an organisation that helps to prevent/alleviate the impact of injustices; train to become someone who gets paid to help people; do whatever the fuck you think is right. Just do not sit back and do nothing. There may be things we cannot change, but do not ever take it for granted. There may always be ways to make the world better. Do not ever let anyone tell you that you are wrong for speaking your mind on an issue, and equally do not do the same to others.

On a side note, we are all in this together. While there may be issues that only have a direct effect on some sections of society, that does not mean that only those who are directly affected can or should have something to say about the matter. I volunteered for an LGBTI organisation in a country miles apart from my own in more ways than one. I fought, amongst other things, for transgender and intersex rights. I am not transgender or intersex. Should I have left those issues alone? No. Because I care and because I can make a difference. The same goes for issues affecting blacks, whites, men, women, whoever. We are all human.

Sorry for the long status and for the swearing, but it had to be said.
